Intuition vs Imagination
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
That strange moment when you “just know” can feel thrilling, confusing, or even scary, especially if you’ve never had language for it. We’re talking about the quiet beginning of psychic awakening: when your awareness sharpens, your intuition gets louder, and you start wondering whether something is happening to you or whether you’re making it up.
We walk through the most common early signs of psychic sensitivity, like feeling overwhelmed in crowds, needing more solitude, picking up on other people’s moods, and sensing tension in a room before a word is said. We also get practical about the difference between imagination and intuition. Imagination is often effortful, emotional, and story-driven. Intuition tends to arrive quickly, simply, and with a neutral tone, before fear has time to interpret it. If you’ve ever had a “download,” a sudden body signal, or a strong first impression that later proved true, you’ll recognize what we’re pointing to.
We also connect intuitive development to nervous system regulation and somatic awareness. Your body is often the first place intuitive information shows up, and when your system is overwhelmed, it can be hard to separate intuition from anxiety. You’ll get grounded tools and helpful questions to reality-check what you’re sensing so you can build intuitive clarity without overwhelm.
If this resonates, subscribe, share the show with someone who’s been feeling “too sensitive,” and leave a review so more people can find these conversations. What’s the clearest intuitive signal you’ve ever had?
Why Psychic Awakening Feels Secret
SPEAKER_00Hello, it's Dr. Donna and welcome to another episode of my podcast, Soul Talk and Psychic Advice. Today we're talking about something that many people experience but uh often hesitate to share. And it's when moments where your awareness feels sharper, your intuition feels louder, and your sensitivity feels stronger, and you quietly wonder, is something happening to me, or am I just imagining this? Why do I feel different? Because you know what happens if you share this with people, they kind of look at you like, Are you okay? They think you're weird, they think you're strange, you get judged. So a lot of people won't share that they're having an experience that is an awakening of their psychic ability or their intuition. You know, some people are brave and they will share it online when it's happening. Other people are like, Yes, yes, it's happening to me too. But honestly, a lot of people keep it secret. It it's just a little bit embarrassing for some people to mention. I know when I first started out there wasn't this openness of the internet yet, and so you know, you didn't really share it. You know, I started learning my gifts more than 25 years ago, and there was no internet, and so I want to talk about this in detail just to help someone if they're questioning what's going on. If you ever question whether your psychic ability might be opening, this episode is for you. Psychic sensitivity does not usually arrive dramatically, it often begins subtly. It's very subtle actually when it happens. You know, people think there's this big pop or big awareness, and no, often no, but you notice something. You know, that's what happens. And so you have a feeling that you cannot explain, a knowing that comes before the logic, an emotional awareness that feels deeper than before, and you just have this knowingness that's coming, a sense that you're picking up on more information than what is being said out loud, and you just feel it really coming to you, and you're just like, whoa, it it feels like a download because you're just getting like this knowledge, and then you find out that it's real, and it's like, hey, how did I know that? What's going on here? And some people get scared of it, some people get freaked out. Some psychics have end up in mental institutions because people in their world thought that they were losing their mind. Um, you know, so it can be uncomfortable to have this happen and not have a support system around you that says you're okay, this is real. So many people assume that psychic ability should feel extreme or obvious. It starts to, but in the beginning, it won't be, you know, because you're just opening up your gift as time goes on. There's moments that it's more obvious or are more extreme, but not all the time. Most of the time it is subtle. So but most often it dealt develops gradually, quietly, through increased awareness of your body, emotions, and perception. It's a practice, practice. It's like a muscle. The more you exercise a muscle, the stronger it gets, right? And so that's what you're doing. See your gift as a muscle. So in the beginning it's subtle, but over time as you practice it, you really understand the psychic information that's coming in. So today we will talk about the difference between imagination and intuition. Early signs your sensitivity may be increasing, why psychic ability usually develops slowly, how the nervous system affects intuitive perception, how to know if what you are experiencing is real, and most importantly, why feeling more sensitive does not mean something is wrong with you. A lot of people get overwhelmed by being, you know, very psychically sensitive, but it nothing's wrong. You get used to it, you learn ways to deal with it. You know, somatic exercises help meditation, you know, yoga. There's different things that you could do to balance it out so it doesn't overtake you and overwhelm you. So often this means that something is opening. You're not broken, you're becoming more aware, and it can happen at any time. You know, I had signs of it as a child, but I wasn't nurtured in that environment, right? And so it just stayed a little bit dormant, but always felt stuff. And you know, your intuition could come at any time in your life, it could come in your 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s. It just shows up when it shows up fully, when it becomes safe for you to have it show up. So let's talk about the psychic ability that often begins as increased sensitivity. One of the first signs of developing intuition is increased sensitivity. You may notice stronger emotional reactions, feeling overwhelmed in crowded environments, like some people just can't handle crowds, needing more quiet time. Yeah, a lot of us psychics need our quiet time, sensing tension between people even when nothing is spoken, feeling affected by other people's moods. Um, and that also comes up, you know, you probably started noticing that if you grew up in a house where there was tension. You know, you could, you know, sense other people's moods, and you know, things like tension between people. And also you become more aware of the energy in a room and you can start reading the room. You know, that's what it means to really read the room is to psychically understand what's going on. So many people worry about something is wrong when this begins. They may think, I used to be able to handle more. Yeah, because before it was dormant, right? So it wasn't overwhelming you. I feel overwhelmed more easily. I know when it was coming on for me, people just thought I was a nervous, anxious person, but you know, it was my gifts coming, you know, to the surface, and they were starting to come more and more intense. So, you know, if you have anxiety, find out why. Found out find out if it's medical, find out if it's psychic, find out why. Just don't go, I have anxiety. Find out the root of it, you know, and you may ask yourself, why am I reacting more strongly than before? You know, why are you feeling things so strongly? Why does it feel like everything's important and everything matters? You know, um, a psychic can't be unbothered. You're gonna be bothered, but you want to find out why. You want to know if it's psychic or it's a situation in your world, and that's the hardest part about being a psychic, is knowing how to separate your life from the rest of the world so you know what signs are for you, and then what cues are just about reading other people, and that takes time to develop. So let's talk about more of this. Increased sensitivity often means your perception is becoming more refined, your nervous system is noticing more information. Yes, our nervous system is involved. You may be picking up on micro expressions, tone changes, emotional shifts, body language, environmental tension, unspoken feelings, your awareness becomes more detailed. Psychic perception does not bypass the body, it moves through the body, it's not just all in the mind, or you know, if you're empath, you're feeling it all over, right? If you're clear sentient, clear knowing, and clear feeling, you're feeling it all over. And even like you're clear audience and clairvoyant, it still goes through the body. Your body is often the first place intuition speaks through sensations like tightness in the chest, warmth in the stomach, pressure in the forehead, sudden calm or unease, right? A sense of knowing without clear reasoning. You just know when people go, I just know I know, and then they're right, you know. These signals can feel unfamiliar at first. Because most of us were never taught how to interpret these things. We weren't. You know, who had time to learn all this stuff with everything else in the world, right? And let's now talk about the difference between imagination and intuition. One of the biggest questions people have is how do I know this in this is intuition and not my imagination? This is an important distinction. Imagination tends to be effortful, right? There's effort involved with imagination. You're feeding it. It often involves thinking, analyzing, or constructing possibilities. You know, we make up stories in our head, we overthink. That's imagination. Intuition feels different. It often arrives quickly, without forcing, without overthinking. Intuition often feels simple, neutral, right? There's no real judgment assigned to it, direct, quiet, and observational. Imagination often feels busy, emotional, traumatic, story driven, and mentally constructed. Yeah, because that's what makes imagination. You're mentally constructing it. Intuition typically appears before fear begins interpreting it. So intuition typically appears before fear begins interpreting it. For example, you meet someone and immediately feel comfortable or uncomfortable. And before you analyze why, before you gather evidence, that first impression is often intuitive. Another example is you think of someone unexpectedly and they contact you shortly. I told many stories about that, well, a few stories so far about that, and I tell more in the podcast, the different ones, or you have a feeling to take a different route home and later learn that there was an accident on your usual route. Sometimes you just know don't go that route, don't go to the store today, don't do this, don't do that. That's intuition. So intuition often communicates in subtle ways. It does not usually shout, it whispers. One usual way to understand intuition is intuition provides information. The mind provides interpretation. Learning psychic development involves learning how to notice the information before the mind adds a story because it will. So everything starts to line up. Things don't always have to make sense right away, but they will make sense. Sometimes we want things to make sense as we're walking the path, but it's as you get farther along the path, it starts coming together. Give space for that in your life. And no, don't freak out of am I doing it right or am I doing it wrong. It'll come together when it's meant to come together because it's pieces, you know, that's coming together in your life. So let's talk about why psychic ability usually develops gradually. Psychic ability rarely appears suddenly, it develops through increasing awareness. Your nervous system learns to interpret more subtle information, just like learning a language. At first, everything sounds unfamiliar, then gradually meaning becomes clearer. It just starts to make sense. Many people become more intuitive after a life transition. Yeah, after a big moment, you know, it could be an illness or just like you know, going through a divorce or you know, moving to a new place, a period of stress, a big stressful event, healing work. Yes, that will open it up therapy because when you clear up the you know, trauma it it lives within us as you're doing work to filter through the trauma and get to the other side where it's no longer causing you to react a certain way. Yeah, what's beneath the surface is often your intuition, somatic practices that also can open up the intuition, meditation for sure, grief, grief really opens it up. I plan to do a podcast soon on why grief opens up the intuition, personal growth, yes, when you do the work on yourself, burnout recovery. A lot of times after people burn out, they have a spiritual experience. And why is this? Because these experiences increase self-awareness, right? And intuition often strengthens when awareness increases. As you become more aware of your own emotions, you become more aware of others' emotions because you're expanding, you're opening up, right? And you learn to listen to your body, and it becomes comfortable to be in your body. You begin recognizing signals more clearly. Psychic ability often grows alongside emotional development. Clarity increases as self-understanding increases. Okay, so that's why. So let's talk about the nervous system and intuition. The nervous system plays a significant role in intuitive perception. When the nervous system feels overwhelmed, it becomes difficult to distinguish intuition from anxiety. Because anxiety is loud, intuition is often calm. Even when the message is serious, it could be calm, it could be crazy. I I felt someone die, and it's like, oh, they're gonna die. That just sounds so like lack of empathy, right? But it could come across that way, and I didn't say it to anyone, it was just something that I was feeling because I'd be more of a human than that, but it could be that subtle. Research in neuroscience shows that the body constantly gathers information from the environment, constantly, through facial expression recognition, tone interpretation, threat detection, and social awareness and pattern recognition. The nervous system processes this information automatically, much faster than conscious thinking. Many intuitive impressions may come from this rapid processing. Your body notices small details your mind has not yet labeled. When your nervous system is regulated, intuition becomes easier to recognize. When your nervous system is dysregulated, fear can distort perception. Developing intuition often involves developing emotional regulation. Practices that support this include slow breathing, yeah, really tuning into the breath, grounding exercises, body awareness, rest, healthy boundaries, reducing overstimulation. The calmer the nervous system becomes, the clearer intuitive signals often feel. Now let's talk about how to tell if you're Your experience is real. Here are helpful questions to ask. Does this feeling feel calm or urgent? Right? Intuition often feels steady. Fear often feels pressure. Does this insight repeat over time? Intuitive signals often return gently. Does this information feel neutral? Intuition often lacks emotional charge. Feels more neutral, non-judgmental. Does clarity come when you relax? Many people notice intuitive clarity increases when they feel calm. Intuition often becomes easier to recognize through practice, like strengthening a muscle. The goal is not to force intuitive ability, it is to allow awareness to develop naturally. So I'm going to close this out for you. If you have been feeling more sensitive, more aware, more perceptive, you are not alone. Many people experience this shift, often quietly, often privately, but they do experience it. And often without guidance. I didn't have any when I started with this gift. And that's why I'm so determined to help other people. It's been great to help people along the way. You're not broken, you're becoming more aware. Awareness is the beginning of intuitive development. In future episodes, we would talk about this more, every aspect of the gift, along with my other topics, right? My social topics. So we would talk about how to strengthen intuition safely, how to feel grounded while becoming more sensitive, and how to trust your perception, and how to develop intuitive clarity without overwhelmed. And so if this episode resonated with you, you might be interested in joining the Embodied Psychic Portal. That is a group that I created for people who want to develop their psychic abilities and do it in a very regulated way in a supported group. And so we explore intuitive development through grounded nervous system supported practices. And I want to thank you for listening. And you know what? It's an exciting world. I used to not feel that way, but it's a very exciting world to be intuitive. It really is, and to have the psychic gift and what it has allowed me to do in my life personally and professionally. And I'm grateful for being able to share it all these years. And I want to thank you for listening. Have a wonderful day, and I will see you in the next episode.
